About The Waterfront Duck
Experience an hour-long unique adventure around South Africa’s most iconic city and waterfront
The Waterfront Duck is a 36-seater amphibious vehicle, built to modern safety standards and imported from overseas. Our first Waterfront Duck was completed and shipped to South Africa in 2024.
Our Seahorse MKIII complies with all required modern safety standards by both land and water
This includes 9 watertight compartments, automatic bilge pumps, ABS brakes, and of course, all other standard safety equipment required by the South African NRCS (National Regulator for Compulsory Standards) for road and SAMSA (The South African Maritime Safety Authority.) for water use. Our skipper/drivers (or “QUACKtains”, as we call them) are dual qualified for both road and land passenger carriage. (Code C1 with PDP for land and minimum category R (>9m) with passenger endorsement for water.)
Why are they called “Ducks”?
The original “Ducks” were built during WWII by The General Motors Corporation with the model name DUKW. Troops quickly started calling them ‘Ducks’ and the name stuck! After the war, many Ducks were adapted for tourism and civilian use, especially in the US.
It is important to note that these original WWII Ducks are now gradually being phased out of service all over the world. New “Ducks”, such as our own, now meet the required modern safety, build and comfort standards.
